 ELECTRONIC LITERATURE CIRCLES
How do teachers motivate all students, those who love to read and those who find reading a chore, to be invested and actively engaged in a discussion about an assigned novel? Think globally. Just as Blackboard recognizes the need to form relationships within a community, Electronic Literature Circles, an innovative partnership in literacy development, includes diverse stakeholders: sixth grade students from Shippensburg Area Middle School (SAMS), a public, suburban school in South Central Pennsylvania; sixth grade teachers, student teachers, and a university professor; and undergraduate, pre-service teachers enrolled in a Teacher Education course at Shippensburg University (SU), a state university in Pennsylvania. These partners designed and piloted an innovative format for discussing the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen using Blackboard to systematically recall literary elements, foster writing skills, enhance technology skills, and evaluate reading perceptions. Attend the presentation to learn the method for implementing this collaborative experience between K-12 schools and Teacher Education programs.

 THINKING OUTSIDE THE LMS
Societal needs are changing, education is evolving and student needs are changing. But the architecture and pedagogy of the LMS – the traditional distance education technology – is still confined to the paradigm of the electronic classroom. This session will examine where we are, propose where we should be as providers of distance education, and suggest how the LMS must change. We’ll identify the opportunities afforded by educational social software, how it can be used to expand the pedagogy of the LMS, and how it is now being used to design and deliver learning “outside the walls” of the traditional classroom paradigm.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS
1:30 - 2:30 PM [Conference Room B]
WHAT DO 21st CENTURY LEARNERS NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL?
At Algonquin College, over 12,000 students make use of Blackboard each day. Each semester 2500 new courses are put online and faculty use of the available tools still show clear differences in how Bb is used in traditional face to face courses as compared to hybrid and online courses. Blackboard has done very well with providing tools that teachers can use to manage their courses and provide information to their students. The 21st Century student however requires much more than content delivery and access to information. Group study, instant messaging, and authentic learning activities that extend beyond the course itself are essential components of a 21st Century education. The emphasis on technology use must be shifted from how teachers use the tools to how students will use them. This session will propose new ways to use existing tools and suggest new tools that students require to be successful.

Glenn MacDougall (Algonquin College)
